Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and the second leading cause of lung cancer overall. To find out if you are at risk, you must have your home tested for radon – which cannot be detected without an assessment.

Radon is a colorless gas that is odorless and tasteless. It is a radioactive chemical that occurs naturally as part of the decay process of certain elements in the soil. The gas then deteriorates into radioactive particles that are inhaled. The particles damage lung tissue eventually causing lung cancer.

Radon can also contaminate water. Although the risks are less with exposure through water, about 20 people die each year from stomach cancer caused by radon in water.

Radon levels are unsafe in more than 1 out of every 14 homes. Since we typically spend over half of our days indoors at home, it is important to know if there is radon present. This gas comes into a house from the earth beneath the foundation, rises through the soil or rock and gets trapped under the structure. The build up of pressure pushes it up through the floors and walls into the home.

Both new and old homes, with or without basements, are at risk for unsafe levels. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, parts of Kentucky are in Zone 1, defined as having the highest potential of elevated radon levels.
